Planting and other small jobs at Giusi's (Market gardener and herbalist)

June 2021, Qualso (Italy), planting and others at Giusi market gardener and herbalist :

At the beginning of June, as we were finishing the crossing of Italy, we stopped at Giusi's house. We met Giusi thanks to Antonietta and Dario who we had slept-in with along the way. Giusi, exuberant, full of energy and always smiling, offered us to help her at the beginning of the summer season in exchange for food and lodging.

So we spent a week at her place helping her in her daily life.

  • Sowing in the ground

  • soil preparation

  • Transplanting of plants

  • Creation of a giant pyramid of fabaceae (beans, peas...)

  • Laying out of paths, fences...

  • Staking and weeding

  • Rearrangement of one of the many unused rooms into a grain library/workshop

During the many rainy days we worked indoors, did crafts, built furniture... and even participated to the market on a Saturday morning!

Thanks to Giusi we learned about medicinal plants, transplanting techniques, but above all we made great encounters with her neighbors, friends and during her Friulian radio show (which she dedicated to us)!

Result:

Waiting for the photos from Giusi!

Thanks a lot to Giusi for this great week, for the meetings, for the meals and for the trips to the Friulian speakeasies!
